Check out this new book by Roy Blitzer - Hire Me Inc. - filled with great ideas and hands-on exercises.
If you're looking for a great way to start the new year - why not consider forming a new company - for yourself. And no, I'm not talking about self-employment (although I personally love being self-employed or doing contract work - more on that another time in Career Advice, and obviously I am a wee bit predisposed to that idea) - but I am talking about how get yourself hired. This does mean finding out your good points and bad points, and realizing your main employee is yourself. One way to start is to consider Suite's course on Job Searches (yes, I wrote it). Another way is to read "Hire Me, Inc. - Package Yourself to Get Your Dream Job" by Roy J. Blitzer. Published by Entrepreneur Media Inc. 2006
This book is packed with great ideas and actual exercises. Best though, is the insistence and room for you to actually DO the exercises. Mr. Blitzer takes you through your accomplishments and interests, and has you apply the results to your career endeavours. He stresses the Marketing side, but without the old connotations. Using a SWOT (a technique I have my Business Students use on themselves to gain understanding of the principle itself as well as start on their goals), Mr. Blitzer shows the reader the way to self actualization as well as self realization.
While I disagree with the style of Resume (I strongly feel you should not use more than two lines if possible for your name and address, add in a graphic line to separate this personal information from the rest of the Resume, and put this all in a Header - so that it will repeat on every page of your Resume while also using it for your cover letter - so that if the pages are separated, you can easily still be contacted for that interview) I do like his inclusion of what to do for online Resume versions.
His use of VIPP - very important point (with a variable for the other P) - ties in nicely with standard business and marketing practices (the four P's of marketing are Product, Price, Promotion and Place - and yes, he does use these four but in a different order and of course, applied to the individual). Each section is nicely summarized at the end as well.
I recommend this book for anyone who wants a hands-on approach to marketing oneself, and learning how to create one's own "Hire Me Inc."
