Career Advice - Survival Xmas Tips

Or How to keep your job and still enjoy those Office Xmas parties

Can you withstand the Office Party Season? Read on for some tips on survival in this festive season.

As the festive season approaches, we all need to ensure our Careers stay on track. So this week in Career Advice we'll discuss some tips on surviving the Office Party - while still enjoying yourself.

  1. Do not carpool. Yes, I know - carpooling cuts down on costs, ensures (hopefully) that one person stays sober, and allows you to walk in with some acquaintances so you don't feel so alone. BUT you will be judged on your carpool participants' behaviour as well as your own - don't chance it. By being responsible for your own travel arrangements you can come and go as you please. And you can always arrange to meet your friends or acquaintances at the party.
  2. If you are at all concerned about the kind of food that may be served - eat a light meal at home before you go to the party.
  3. Watch your alcohol intake. Even if you are not driving - alcohol and office parties really don't mix - unless you want to take a chance on making a fool of yourself.
  4. Try not to allow yourself to be pawed by any other attendee - and yes, this means steer clear of boss/supervisors and their spouses. Be friendly, and be aware.
  5. DO NOT gossip about anyone from work - you have no idea who might be listening.
  6. DO NOT put down any project from work - again, you have no idea who might be listening.
  7. 5 and 6 also count for suppliers/business contacts.
  8. Smile, even when your mouth/teeth hurt.

I've seen more careers go belly-up due to Office festive season parties. I always try to encourage luncheons for these get togethers - less chance of alcohol being involved, and it really gives a break during the day - when it is needed.

This doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself - but remember, you are still at work, even though you are at a party - and you will be watched. These are your office-mates, not necessarily your friends.

And if you do have good friends who happen to be office mates - try to keep it that way by not taking advantage of their friendship during these times.

Cheers!
