Getting Back to Basics

Career Advice - Who cares if there's a small mistake on my communications?

You need to get back to basics - your grammar, punctuation and tone must convey a professional manner at all times, not just for those special interviews/letters.

Surprisingly, many people attempting to get a new job, career, or even just sending basic business correspondence forget that the impression of the written word will go further than anything they say afterwards. Yes, despite the advent of text messaging and IM (instant messengers such as MSN Messenger) - the business world still demands correct grammar and punctuation. Your career depends on your ability to get back to basics - and apply these basics.

WHOA! Ya mean when the newspapers use nite instead of night - that I can't do that? Hey - wait a minute - look at all those web sites with spelling errors/typos and varying degrees of grammatical indifference? So why should it matter if there's a typo in my work/letter? The reader still knows what I'm saying, eh?

Yes - that's just it - you are giving an impression that you may not WANT to give - one that shows lack of education (or application of that education), lack of caring, and lack of professionalism.

Sorry, no excuses. Even large websites need to re-edit and re-read their work sometimes - and yes, it is boring, mundane and eye straining. But to maintain a professional look also provides something else - PRIDE in one's own work.

If you can't take the time to correct those errors, how professional are you? And yes, companies are judged on their appearance in all matters.
