Top Jobs for Professionals Who Prefer to Telecommute

Jun 17, 2009 Crystal Lewis

Working from home, or "telecommuting," has become an increasingly desirable career feature among full-time and part-time workers.

Telecommuting isn't just for stay-at-home moms anymore. Professionals from all walks of life are trying to find jobs that will allow them to work from home. The following are four options for job seekers who would like to put their skills to use without reporting to an office.

Public Relations

Public relations consultants use print, web, and television media outlets to promote their clients. Through the distribution of press releases, proper branding, strategic publicity practices, and image enhancement operations, PR specialists help their clients boost their bottom lines.

While it is common for public relations workers to join established agencies, there are thousands who work independently from home and make an excellent living at it. Full-time PR professionals typically earn between $35,600 and $65,310.

Web Design

There is an ongoing demand for IT professionals with skills in web and graphic design. The rapidly changing world of technology has created a variety of interesting and challenging career options for people who enjoy providing services to businesses and non-profits. This is especially true for programmers with entrepreneurial inclinations.

The field of web design is becoming increasingly competitive, but there is still a strong market for good contractors. Earnings in this category range between $30,600 and $53,310.

Insurance Agent

The insurance profession is more than a century old, and is still expanding today. The best insurance agents are caring customer service professionals with keen consultative selling skills. A large number of agents choose to work from home, and are able to save a tremendous amount of money in overhead costs by doing so.

Telecommuting is a great option for insurance agents who have small children or small books of business. Full time life, health, property, and liability insurance agents earn between $31,640 and $69,180.

Tax Preparer

While full-time tax preparers are busiest during the first half of the year, a large number of professionals in this category are able to sustain themselves year-round by providing their services to businesses requiring quarterly filings. Free training is often provided by companies like H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt. It may also be beneficial for an aspiring tax preparer to take two or three college level accounting courses.

Tax preparers and accountants have demonstrated for years that it is possible to successfully work from home. Fifty percent of professionals who provide this service earn around $29,420. Tax preparers in the 90th percentile earn more than $60,000 per year.

While these options are not the only ones available to telecommuters, they do offer a tremendous amount of flexibility. Interested parties can enter these fields as full-time and part-time workers, as entrepreneurs, and as traditional employees.
