"Negotiation Genius: How to Overcome Obstacles and Achieve Brilliant Results at the Bargaining Table and Beyond" is an excellent book for anyone in today's world.

Negotiation Genius:How to Overcome Obstacles and Achieve Brilliant Results at the Bargaining Table and Beyond by Deepak Malhotra and Max Bazerman, is an excellent resource for anyone who has found themselves in any kind of situation requiring compromise or concilliation - from house buying to United Nations agreements. Although written more from (or for) an MBA point of view, the authors not only manage to consistently use "real world" situations, but show how one can apply the lessons to the real world.

Why should this be included in Career Advice? When was the last time you negotiated for a new job, or a pay raise, or a change in your department? What, that was an interview, a request, or a meeting? Think again! YOU need this book to help you understand all the different ways negotiation affects our lives, as well as our careers!

Malhotra and Bazerman are no strangers to the world of business, and both teach at the Harvard Business School. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Malhotra provides negotiation consulting to businesses worldwide. Bazerman has also written two other books: Negotiating Rationally and Judgment in Managerial Decision Making.

Divided into three main parts, this book starts off with defining the basics of negotiation (your toolkit); explains the psychology of negotiation; and then takes you into the real world of negotiation (more types and variations, and what to do). Throughout each chapter the book draws heavily, if not exclusively on real examples, some of which are quite well known. Paradigms are also set up, to help you immediately try out each type of negotiation, or new way of viewing (as well as acting on) situations.

Written in an easy to read style, yet applicable to MBA professionals, this "how to" book helps you to see both sides of negotiation, and how a "win-win" can actually end up being a "lose-lose": finding a middle ground is not always the way to go (see Chapter 8). By seeing both sides, you can better negotiate.

While their emphasis is to help you become a "negotiation genius", their book is perfect for the novice to start honing new skills; a great resource for those climbing up the ladder; and a guide for those who aspire to be geniuses. Truly a reference book for years to come!
