For job seekers who are planning on attending a business conference or tradeshow, here are some tips on how to turn it into more than just a learning experience.

The networking options at a business conference or tradeshow are endless . Active job seekers as well as those that may be considering a future move should use this time to meet and greet people in the industry.

Here’s how to take advantage of this perfect venue for meeting like-minded people who may be in a great position to help job seekers advance their career.

Participate

Many conferences have an opening session where breakfast may be served and a keynote speaker addresses a timely topic of interest. Sitting at a round table of ten is a great way to meet and greet other business professionals, learn more about what they do and make connections. Job seekers just may find themselves sitting next to someone who has the perfect career opportunity available or knows someone who does.

Welcome receptionsle in the know while doing it in a more relaxed atmosphere. It provides attendees the chance to get to know someone without the pressure of conducting business or always talking shop. Remember to act professional no matter the situation.

Conferences and tradeshows allow attendees to further explore topics related to a chosen industry or field. Enjoy the presentation and the speaker? Be sure to let her know. Have an additional question? Be sure to ask. And don’t forget to pick up the handouts for all the workshops and sessions.

Schmingle

Think: mingle and schmooze. While this is a great opportunity to meet industry experts, talking to peers can be beneficial, too. Everyone has to start somewhere and by comparing notes attendees may get tips about how to break into the industry or a certain career, come away with a new idea to try or gain a new contact that could open a future door. For those who attend the event with a co-worker or friend, be sure not to stay glued to each other the entire time. It may be more comfortable, but ultimately may be a lot less rewarding. Split up to take advantage of multiple workshops and networking opportunities then come together later to discuss that day’s events.

Collect

Events like these always have free giveaways and industry literature available. Make sure to collect information on companies of interest for future career possibilities. Business cards are one of the best things to collect while schmingling. Note the date on the back along with where it came from. This helps when contacting the owner later by providing a way to begin the conversation.
