Independent contractors are required to pass an ODesk Readiness Test for Independent Contractors in order to be able to apply for ODesk freelance projects.

ODesk offers 212 free tests in 24 categories. The freelancers working with ODesk are free to choose whether to take a test, or which one to take. Any of these qualification tests can be taken at any time in order to increase the number of freelance projects an independent contractor may apply for at a time.

The ODesk Readiness Test for Independent Contractors is a mandatory test, which enables new users of the online marketplace to start bidding for available jobs.

Preparing to Take the ODesk Readiness Test for Independent Contractors

The ODesk Readiness Test for Independent Contractors is an open book test. Its main purpose is to make sure that the freelancer, who is to start working at ODesk, is ready to work with the system, and knows the policies and practices of the online marketplace.

So, the first step towards taking the ODesk Readiness Test is getting familiar with how the system works. For this, an independent contractor should:

  1. Download and install ODesk Team software (the Readiness Test has questions related to it)
  2. Connect to the "Training Team Room" (not required, but can be of assistance for passing the Readiness Test)
  3. Study the following topics, that can be found in the FAQ section of the web-site:

  • Following oDesk Policies
  • Getting Hired
  • Working on Assignments
  • Getting Paid
  • Starting Companies on oDesk
Passing the ODesk Readiness Test for Independent Contractors

The test consists of 25 multiple choice questions, 90% of which should be answered within 1 hour. In order to pass the ODesk Readiness Test, an independent contractor should be familiar with the following topics of the ODesk FAQ section:

  • Benefits of Working on ODesk
  • Desk User Obligations
  • Desk Fees
  • Getting Help
  • Applying to Jobs
  • Interviews
  • Desk Team Client
  • Time Log
  • Work Diary
  • Feedback
  • Guaranteed Payment
  • Payment Methods
  • Payment Schedule
  • Provider Companies

Since it is an open book test, the simplest way to pass it is having two browser windows open: one for actually taking the test, and the second to look for the answers if needed. All the answers are in the Help section of the system.

When taking the test, it might be a good idea to remember, or even write down, the answers chosen for each question. When a freelancer is done with the test, the system shows which questions were answered incorrectly.

Therefore, if an independent contractor has to, or chooses to retake the test, one can refer to this information in order to make sure he or she chooses the same answers for the previously correctly answered questions, and different ones (check again with the FAQ section) for the questions that were answered incorrectly.

ODesk Readiness Test for Independent Contractors is required to be taken by each freelancer starting to work with ODesk. The test consists of 25 questions, and can be retaken unlimited number of times. It is an open book test, so a freelancer can (and has enough time to) search for the answers while taking the test.
