Book Review: Work Like You're Showing Off. Written by Joe Calloway. Published by Wiley. Online Publicity provided by FSB Associates.

Mr. Calloway is no stranger to the book industry, having already written a best seller with Becoming a Category of One, as well as Indispensable:How to Become the Company Your Customers Can't Live Without. His vast experience with companies and customers alike provides for an informative session of wisdom. But you have to get past his use of cliches and hammering of simple points to get to the really good sections. DO NOT despair - the book really is worth the time and effort - just read the first few chapters with a grain (ok, a bag) of salt for the tone. And. Do. Not. Get. Too. Insulted. With. His. Habit. Of. Writing. Like. This. To. Prove. A. Point.

While for many, the idea of showing off at work seems foreign, Mr. Calloway does explain the showing off he's talking about is really the same idea as "blowing your own horn" as opposed to being an obnoxious braggart. And the book really isn't about showing off, it's about how to get better at what you already do, or how to create something better (or something good). Now that's something we can always use - any new ideas and approaches are always welcome and sought after!

His use of company and personal examples in the latter part of the book help to clarify his points, which basically are the four Commitments: Action, Improvement, Connection, and Purpose. His eloquency on these points are worth the investment of time and money.

Look, to be honest, if it wasn't for writing a review for this book, there would have been reason to stop reading it after the first couple of chapters. The redundancy, the lack of respect for the reader audience and its intelligence (By. The. Incessant. Use. Of. This. Type. Of. Supposed. Enhancement. As. Well. As. Tone.), and the lack of saying anything new or in a new way was a turn off. But if you persist - you'll be glad you did! Mr. Calloway does not just talk about how to use these Commitments, he gives concrete ways to do it - and gets the reader to realize each person must find his/her own way. No false promises; but good, solid ways to find your own route while providing the reader with concrete real examples from his own life and work.

Overall, this book is worth the investment - just remember to get past the first few chapters - you'll be glad you did.
