Reliability of information

How reliable is the information on your Resume? Remember to expand, but don't fall into the trap of inventing!

Last week we discussed some quick tips to help ensure your Resume does not end up in the circular file (the wastebasket for the uninitiated). While your Resume must be readable, it is most important that the information is reliable and accurate. So what can you do to ensure your reliability of information remains intact while still trying to impress a future boss? Keep reading for more advice on Resume Writing and Reliability of details.

Just the facts, ma'am. And the fact is you should not INVENT experience, but you can EXPAND on the experience you have.

First, ensure that all dates are correct for your employment or school time. Forget about an exact date - a month and year is fine - and sometimes just the year (for example, that you graduated from a program in 2004). Also ensure you do have the correct name of employer or program, as well as correct addresses and phone numbers (if you are including them). Yes, this does mean you must check these addresses and phone numbers to ensure they are correct - that the employer has not moved, etc.

Now, what about the details of the program or work duties? Here's where we can EXPAND, but not INVENT. Talk about what you did, don't be afraid to enhance, but do not pretend you did something you didn't. Worked as a cashier? Then you have experience in dealing with irate customers and have been trusted with cash, but you do not necessarily have any managerial experience (unless you were a head cashier), so don't say you were in charge of others. Get the idea?

The more reliable your Resume is, the more the potential employers can trust you with being a part of their company. So get back to your Resume Writing and go over your details!
