Resume Writing Tips - how do you set up your Resume for that perfect look? What works in set up? What doesn't?
We've discussed Resume Writing content and basic Resume Writing tips - but I am constantly asked HOW to set up the dreaded Resume - what works? What doesn't? Is there a set format for a Resume? Honestly, the reason there are so many books on the market for Resume Writing is that there is no ONE formula - no "one size fits all this is the magic way to get your Resume noticed". (However, I strongly advise that bad grammar, as in the previous example, should be avoided.) Basically, your Resume is used as a listing of jobs held with explanation of responsibilities and contact information on where you worked/are working, along with achieved Education (schools, courses, seminars, etc.) and skill sets (technical and soft skills). A newly graduated student is high on the education end, but generally low on the experience side - so emphasize the skills learned in school and part time employment. An experienced Manager may have scads of employment features, but low on the education side - so take an upgrade course or seminar to complement that experience and SHOW the prospective employer you are willing to learn and take on new challenges. I tend to prefer a mixture of the classic Chronological along with the Functional - this way EVERYONE can show off their best achievements: students listing their education first; while mature workers list their skills first. Just think of it as "best foot forward" - and you get the idea. Just remember - keep it clean - use the information from the first of this series about letterhead. Don't lie or embellish, use action words to describe your responsibilities, ensure everything lines up (use tabs as necessary) and ensure you also have enough white space (any side, but most people write in the left side) for any comments the interviewer/scanner may want to add.
