How to Stay Sane and Productive While Running a Home Business

Sep 21, 2009 Catherine Owen

Running a home business can be challenging. It's vital to establish a routine, ensure privacy and maintain a level of concentration in order to be productive.

More and more individuals are running home businesses in this era of down-sizing, high daycare costs and unique economic challenges. For people who work at an office or other external place of business, working at home can seem ideal. One doesn't have to commute, spend money on fancy office wear or eating out, and stress can indeed be lessened. However, there are many challenges to working at home too, among them the need for focus, privacy and self-imposed routine.

The Need for Routine When Working at Home

The hardest part about not having a boss and working for oneself is the constant need for self-discipline and structure. When working at home, it's even more necessary to impose a routine on oneself in order to achieve anything. Whether one is running a home-based tutoring, tax preparation or internet business, creating a structure to the day is essential.

Start the day with self-care. Don't forget to wash, dress, eat a healthy meal and exercise. Working at home, it's easy to let one's appearance and health slide, but maintaining a positive self image and a strong body will only improve one's ability to function at work. Depending on the kind of work one is involved in, the routine can change based on the need for repetition or variety. Regardless, setting aside certain times of the day to engage in particular types of work is important. If possible, undertake work involving more intellectual thought in the morning and save more monotonous tasks like filing or typing for later in the day when one is more likely to be tired. Get out for a walk at least once a day for fresh air and a change of pace.

The Need for Privacy When Working at Home

Home businesses rarely receive the respect accorded to work outside the house. People often feel free to call to chat during the day or even pop by for a random visit. If the phone isn't required for business use, unplug it or turn it down throughout business hours. If it is, screen calls and remind associates and friends that one is not available during certain times of the day. Tell those who visit unexpectedly that they are negatively affecting the energy required to undertake a day's work, and thus the expected profits.

Hang a sign on the front door with the business name on it and the hours if necessary. Emphasize the seriousness of this business and treat the home in a similar way one would treat any office.

The Need for Focus When Working at Home

Maintaining concentration is often tricky at home. There are many lures and distractions, among them the availability of the television, radio, personal books, computer programs, the internet, readily accessible food, house work and even pets. While taking an occasional break to walk the dog, have a snack or even surf You Tube is a perfectly acceptable form of relaxation, when these modes of relaxation become too regular then productivity is compromised.

It's important to discipline oneself in order to avoid these temptations, remove them if possible or allocate them particular hours in one's set routine. Often a partner or spouse can expect that the one at home will undertake all the chores because of working at home. In such a case, it is vital to underline that the spouse is actually working all day too and that thus the chores and domestic responsibilities, including childcare, need to be fairly divided.

Additionally, keeping the work space clear and uncluttered boosts the ability to be productive. Sustaining an organized filing system and providing a definite separation between domestic and work space increases the likelihood of success. If respect for a home business is shown, and a level of seriousness towards its endeavors is presented, then others will begin to match that respect for what is, after all, a perfectly valid way of making a living.
