It's not too late for anyone to find summer employment; there are still many opportunities that will provide full time now, and potential part time in the fall.

There are still many opportunities for summer employment, to provide you with a full time job now and the potential of part time work later on.

Camps

While most of the recruiting happens in the early winter months, many camps, both day and overnight, still need to fill certain jobs such as cooks, wait-staff, cleaners. It may not be as glamorous as being on the water staff or being a camp counsellor, but you are still out in the fresh air, and you do not have the responsibility of taking care of the campers. Check with your local day camps in your area, as well as any overnight camps you would be willing to live at while working.

Marketing

There are many marketing companies which are constantly looking for warm bodies. You just need a willingness to work long hours, and must like to deal with people. This IS marketing. Examples are Summit Marketing and Advertising Inc. and Consumer Impact Marketing. CIM has an excellent reputation both in the US and Canada – so check out the opportunities.

Be careful though of any marketing company. Be sure you do read all contracts and expectations before becoming an employee.

Landscaping

Someone has to cut that grass! Many landscapers are constantly looking for hard working staff, as many who start do not stay. It is hard, hot, and thirsty work. But it is steady employment.

Retail

During an economic downturn while many full time jobs are scare, the void is filled with part time jobs. Take a stroll through your favourite mall – and you will find many part time opening signs in the windows. Most malls also have a general posting board for positions within that mall. Just check with the information booth and you will find its location. Take copies of your resume and make sure you are neat and presentable. After all, if you see something you are interested in applying and working for, you should take immediate action and apply that day.

Temp Agencies

While this route may not be for everyone, temporary agencies are a viable option for anyone looking for short term employment. Check your local listings for the temporary agencies close to you. Note that you will have to pass varying tests of your skills and competencies before any agency will hire you. Please make sure you also read any fine print before signing any contract. Read this article on Temp Agencies as well as Warning! All Temp Agencies Are Not Alike for more information.

Restaurants

While fine dining may not take you on without any prior experience, most family type restaurants and bar/grills are always looking for part time staff. This includes wait-staff, hosting, busboys, kitchen staff, etc. Note that many restaurants will NOT post openings in their window – would you like to eat at a place that may not be fully staffed? And yes, it is always better to go in person, but don't go at peak hours of meals. It is certainly good manners to call ahead and ask the manager if any positions are available. Even better though is to ask the manager if she/he will be in at a certain time, as you'd like to present your resume and talk about any potential positions.

Bottom Line

Many full time employees want to take off some time during the summer – so check out temporary agencies as well as retail stores for positions that may be open. Don't forget about the high turnover that happens in the service industry such as restaurants. And if you love the outdoors, there is still time to get employment at a camp (but most likely not as a counsellor) or even with a landscaping company.
