Organizations that need to reduce staff numbers do so by looking at who is expendable. Don't be on that list.

Working for an organization that closes its doors and goes out of business is a lot different than working for a company that merely reduces staff levels for economic or business reasons.

In the first case, there’s not much anyone can do because everyone is out on the street. However, in the second situation, savvy employees have the opportunity to strengthen their position with the company to ensure they are not among the newly departed. Looking for job security is about knowing what to do and how to do it to secure a place in the company.

Viable organizations that need to tighten their purse strings in order to stay afloat during tough economic times are going to focus on retaining those individuals who can provide them the most bang for their buck. So it is important to understand these five steps and how they can lessen someone’s chances of being laid off.

Build a Brand

Personal branding should automatically be part of an employee’s career plan, long before and regardless of any announcement of a reduction in force. Personal branding is what sets employees apart and highlights their special qualities. It’s their reputation. Create a reputation that anyone would be proud to have. Maintain confidences, be dependable and reliable, and be visible. Develop a thirty second elevator speech that says it all.

Solve Problems

The employees with the best chances at job security are those that resolve the issues and help the organization function at its peak. Those just getting by – the “eight and skate” mentality – are most likely to top the layoff list because they don’t bring anything extra to the table. Stay ahead of the curve by bringing value to the organization. Find better ways of doing the same old thing. Improve processes, procedures and systems. Take personal interest in the success of the organization as well as coworkers.

Make Connections

Yes, the old “it’s not what you know, but who you know” does make a difference. Networking is still one of the most widely used methods for getting – and keeping -- a job. Being likeable, having great relationship building skills, and developing rapport with those in power – including an immediate supervisor – can mean the difference between being on the short list and having a job in the morning. Employees need to develop their visibility and credibility through their everyday actions and behavior as well as their involvement in key business projects.

Keep Learning

Nothing goes stale as quickly as yesterday’s news. To improve job security, every employee should be in a constant state of learning. That includes everything from new technology and the latest computer programs to what’s happening in current events. Understand business and market trends as well as what the competition is doing.

Be the Best

Whatever an employee’s role in the organization, they need to do it to the best of their ability. Job security means being a shining star.

Most of all, understand that job security can only go so far. Sometimes things just happen. However, by following these five steps employees can at least walk away with a great letter of reference.
