I'm often asked to read over, correct and/or write Cover Letters for other people to use (both paid or for suggestions). It seems so many forget the purpose of a Cover Letter. Your Resume has the facts; the Cover Letter has why these facts make you a candidate for a particular job.
You may notice I've avoided the use of the overworked phrase "ideal candidate" for a job. I'm so tired of reading that phrase on every Cover Letter for every job (yep, think of the person who has to read thousands of applications, all stating they are the "ideal candidate". ) After awhile - I start saying "yeah right, you and everyone else. Tell me something new". But if you don't state you're the ideal candidate, you're afraid the company won't think of you as one, and you'll miss getting an interview.
Nope! What most scrutinizers are looking for are matches to the posted ad as well as how you match. Don't just list what the ad states - tell them HOW you can and have accomplished those "matches".
Anyone can say they have the desired traits - prove it.
See this course for more tips, as well as this week's article on Cover Letters.
