I did it! I've made the first HUGE (for me) step in furthering my career - I have become a student!
Yes, I carefully weighed my options; self-assessed myself until I was totally confused (and did it again to regain my goals and composure); and researched the industry (which I have been doing and planning for two years now). For me, online education was the route. I needed something I could do while I still worked (like most, I am still dependant on that paycheque), and I wanted to stay within my chosen profession of adult education/training. I was sorely tempted to upgrade within the Psychology field, but felt it would not be in my best interest.
While I am a believer in continuing education at any time, it now seems so formal - while I am taking courses I am also applying as a Graduate student. Fortunately, these courses WILL count as credit IF I am accepted into the program.
I am excited, scared, and nervous. Hmm, that's how I feel at the start of every semester as a College Prof! Just that now I'm on the other end. It IS a bit strange - my inbox is not filled with student enquiries, complaints and worries. As a matter of fact, I think I'M the one cluttering up someone else's inbox!
Classes officially start on Monday, but Online is a bit different - we actually get much of the material ahead of time. Assignments and/or due dates are clearly marked on the schedule well ahead of time, so it will be easy to juggle work and education commitments.....I hope :)
More on Online Education in an upcoming article.
