Not Getting That Interview

It Might Be For The Best

Just because you didn't get an interview doesn't mean there's something wrong with you - it could be something wrong with the company.

Why do so many people complain to me they have sent out so many Resumes, and don't get an interview.

First of all, check out my latest article How To Get A Job Interview. Once you've followed the guidelines, tell me if the ad you responded to said "we thank all applicants, but only those selected for an interview will be contacted". WHY do you think that line is put in? There are a few legitimate reasons, but too often it's because the employer actually has someone in mind, and will only possible entertain the "cream of the crop" - meaning someone with outstanding experience relating to the job; or the employer expects a huge response to the ad, and still intends to only call those who look the absolute best. So, you may be out if your experience and your wording does not match exactly what the employer is looking for.

Conversely, you may get a call if you happen to mention one point they are looking for. I answered an ad a few years ago, as did a colleague. He had far more experience than me for what was stated on the ad, but I mentioned I had experience with a minor software they mentioned offhand. I got the interview, he didn't. Turned out all they wanted was someone who knew that minor software; they already were taking other staff and upgrading them to this position. The ad, as far as I was concerned, was not honest.

So, it's not always your Resume that's at fault; but as a precaution, always mention everything you can do from the ad (and not verbatim!).
