So what's the big deal on a cute email addy?

Your email addy is a window into your personality - BUT how much should you be showing to that prospective employer?

I am always amused at the varying email addy's I see from my students and oftimes my clients as well. Our society has promoted us to promote ourselves - and we are often encouraged to create "bold, new" ways to express ourselves. All well and good, but the appropriate way to promote yourself in the business world is to not only project but maintain a professional appearance in everything you submit to a prospective client/employer - your Resume, Cover Letter, and yourself at the Interview. And yes, this starts with how you project yourself in your email addy's.

Cute ones are great for friends and for self-esteem or ego's - and that's exactly where they belong - simply for self-esteem or ego. The one you use on your Resume et al should be clear and clean (no caffeine!).

Think of it this way - you've sent in your Resume via email as requested and your addy is hotnumbertoosexy@email.com - do you really feel the employer will bother to reply to you? Chances are your Resume is about the same as a ton of others - your cute name has just ensured yours gets to the bottom of the pile or even just deleted. Honestly - do you want to type in that name at work - even if it is for your daily business? Ok, this might depend on the type of business you're in, but for most regular business folks - the plainer the better.

On the first day of my classes - I let the students know that those "cute" names will probably be deleted as spam by the College Server - so I will never receive their assignments, which means they won't get the mark. They get the message - fast!
