After the frenzy of the last snow storm and the hours of back-breaking shovelling, let alone the frenzy of shopping for the holidays, I decided to get up late today. It's the quiet before the next storm - a bit of downtime before the clatter of kids coming home for the holidays; neighbours and friends dropping by; cooking for the masses and entertaining for all. Coffee in hand, I opened the window shades to let in the sunshine. Our inside birds (most conures and song birds) greeted the world with chirps of joy - and the outside birds (sparrows, chickadees, and some other small birds I'm not sure of) were swooping from the cover of an umbrella tree to the feeder stock full of good eats and treats.
All these birds were taking turns - enjoying themselves immensely in the journey of tree to food and back again. They chittered with each other - even seemingly to dare each other in their dives and flights. Their comraderie was evident, and envious.
As I sipped my coffee, I marvelled at their simplicity of life. Good friends, support, a warm tree and food. During the storm these creatures were nowhere to be found, and I had worried about them. Obviously they stuck it out together; no rushing to fill in the gaps, just a support system to help each other.
So, step back from the frantic pace of your life. The holiday season should be about the journey, not the destination, as is your career, and your life.
Take time for what many call the "little things" in your life - enjoy the scenery, the calm, the dives and the flights. The destination is the same for us all - so you might as well enjoy the journey.
Have a Happy Holiday Season!
