The Key to Change is Mindset

As a Professor, I often see "older" or "mature" students - trying to do just what this week's column talks about - change careers. Some were sent by Manpower or Workman's Compensation - they have been injured and can no longer do the job they once did. Many are looking for that change - tired of doing what they normally do, and hoping for a boost in their income salary as well as a change of job.

Some will make it, some will not. And not because they are not capable, but because they don't think they will make it - their mindset hasn't changed. Without that, without the enthusiasm to go forth and try something different or new from their regular habits, they will set themselves up for failure, even before they begin.

And just saying "I'll be positive" won't work. It will help, but that is not all of it. You have to really try and embrace change. And more importantly, you really have to believe in yourself that you CAN do it....eventually. The "....eventually" is there because really believing in yourself still allows for failure and misgivings, but you do realize you will be able to reach your new goals if you keep steady to them. Really successful people do NOT have all the answers, they just keep trying until something works. They don't necessarily believe they are "the best and the most and no one else is greater", but they do understand they have the ability and the strength to keep going and find what they need, or what the solution is to a problem. Their attitude is one of "CAN" - and it effects everyone else into thinking they can - so it does happen! Sort of self-fulfilling - but it does work!

So, if you really want to try and change careers, first change your mindset - you CAN do it, you WILL get there, and it WILL take time - but you're ready for that change!
