The Reality of Job Searching

Looking Beyond Job Sites

Are we becoming too reliant on technology? If we can't find it on the internet, do we give up? Should we?

I'm both amazed and worried about our dependency on technology - especially on computers. I see too many upcoming students who don't even know how to go to a mall and look for a job, let alone check out the newspapers. See my article on looking beyond Job Sites here.

Don't get me wrong - computers and the internet are great - I earn a living using both these components. But I also know that most jobs require some sort of people skills - so just relying on computer/internet for social (chat rooms/mudd games) or business (job searching) interactions is NOT a good idea, and is actually detrimental.

Yes, the wired world is here - and it's getting better (or more wired) every day. Embrace it, but don't let it control YOU. You still need to know how to handle yourself with people - and the only way to learn or do that is to BE with people. Video phones or Ipods don't cut it - you need the real thing.

The reality is, a job search needs to encompass ALL methods and avenues of searching - too often people just do a daily check of internet job sites. No job, no more searching that day. Get off your chair and get out into the real world - use your people connections, the employment office, the library, the newspapers - any kind of connection that has you talking and dealing ALONG with your internet job search!

Besides, the fresh air will do you good!
