Video Resumes are not for all. As a presenter and lecturer, I have had to create a few of these "tell-us-about-yourself-and-why-you-are-the-best-candidate-for-the-job-in-two-minutes-or-less". I don't like them. I cannot show my scope in two minutes, I cannot prove my accreditation and skills for the job in that short a time. But I can give a quick view of what I look like standing and talking - and they get to hear my appropriately modulated voice. I always use humour for these short takes, as I know that will last longer than anything else I do.
I'm also getting older, and I am worried that my age does show. I can no longer pass for under thirty (cough, cough), or whatever magical number the employers are looking for. Interviews give me the chance to prove my worth: videos can work against me if the scanners are making snap judgements.
I did apply (and get) a contract that requested a video that could be up to 30 minutes - in effect, giving everyone a chance to present their full ensemble. Unfortunately, I would have had to relocate - something I am not willing to consider.
With the further ease of technology, I fully expect for employers to set up "video conferencing" interviews - an easy feat to accomplish with a webcam, speakers, mic and proper software. The employer could allow downloads of the software (trial version or some sort of blow up after a certain time - most of these software programs automatically ensure proper configuration on your computer) - so now you just set the mutually convenient time.
Now, I just have to get my webcam back from my kids.......
