Working for a Temp Agency

Sometimes I see clients who are very distressed: the unemployment payments are running out soon, and the prospect of a job still seems far off. I often suggest the client consider the option of temporary work with or through an Agency - and I am shocked at the negative and stereotyped response!

Temporary Agencies offer work on a contract basis - that contract can be for whatever you and the Agency determine. The Agency gets a contract from an employer for so many workers at such and such a rate with such and such skills - then they look within their own registered workers to see who "fits the bill" so to speak, as well as post a call for other workers using local newspaper ads (usually local to the business, not necessarily the Agency - as the potential worker will probably not want to travel too far to get to work).

For many, working for an Agency takes the stress off the actual working environment. While the Agency pays you, you work off-site in effect.

More importantly, Agencies do NOT just deal with simple clerical or physical labour without thought. Agencies need everything from Bookkeepers/Accountants to Legal Assistants to Medical professionals - anything that needs trained personnel on an occassional basis. You get paid to work, and you're still free to find full-time work.

As an added bonus, usually because you are less stressed about the financial picture and feel better about yourself as you are actually working, and therefore project better at interviews, you actually DO find your full-time work during your stint with an Agency. I've had many skeptical clients go through this scenario to its happy conclusion!
