How can you find work as a Virtual Admin? Are those sites on the internet to be trusted? Should you pay for the privilege of being a member?

Part two on Virtual Administration - Career Advice.

Read Part one here.

Last time we talked about the basics of a Virtual Administration career - was it for you? How do you set up your office? How do you get clients?

This article will explore some of the internet networking possibilities for a Virtual Admin. Please note, this is not an article about rating or listing all sites on the internet that pertain to Virtual Admin work, but it may help you decide if a site is right for you.

Basically, as in all freelance or contract work - there are two types of sites. The first asks you to join the site for a monetary fee and lets you "bid" on contracts; the second allows you to join for free IF you meet their criteria. Many sites now allow you to look at some basic job postings, but charge for you to respond or post your own list of accomplishments.

And all of them should be approached nowadays with a "Buyer Beware" attitude.

To be blunt - I have picked up a few contracts when these sites were all free - but have never been successful on the "bidding" sites. These sites have the employer list the job and ask for you, the potential person to fill the contract, to "bid" on what you would charge to complete that job or contract. Obviously the bidding goes low, and you must often make your own arrangements for payment between you and the potential contractor. Here's where I do strongly suggest you invest in a Paypal account.

An example of this type of site is Allfreelance Work - I still like them though, as I have picked up the odd contact.

The other sites ask you to fill out their forms along with a resume, and they state they will have you complete a test to join them. I'm still waiting to hear from some of them, as I went for the "free" package.

Suggestion? Sign up for everything you can for free. Try to submit your bids/contracts - and see where it goes.

Yes, I do feel there is enough solid work out there for all Virtual Admins - you just have to invest your time and energy to finding the right ones for you.

Please share your good stories and your horror stories with us!

Hi Paym,

I've just read your Virtual Admin series - very interesting. You offer excellent advice for those getting started, and your second part on the sites that are helpful - or not always so helpful - was great. I'm sure anyone who is interested in this type of work will find both articles to be very helpful!

Thanks for a great series!

Paym Bergson :
Hi you,

Suggest you do a search on "insurance manager" both in Suite101 and the Web. And you should also try calling an insurance company - get the name of a manager, have a list of questions, and then explain you are thinking of becoming an insurance manager and would that person have time to talk to you or answer some questions - when would be a good time? You might even offer to take them for coffee (if the person is in your area).

You could also check out the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They tend to have profiles of jobs, such as insurance managers.
